TransPORTs to Present on Apprenticeship Development Models at 2018 NCPN Conference

TransPORTs has been chosen to present at this year’s National Career Pathways Network (NCPN) annual conference. The TransPORTs panel session on “Apprenticeship Program Development: Educator, Employer and Workforce Intermediary Models for Success” will be held on Thursday, October 11. TransPORTs Executive Director Barbara Murray and TransPORTs Project Manager Katie Adams will be joined on the panel by Ranken Technical College President Stan Shoun, State of Kentucky Apprenticeship Director Deborah Williamson, and Oceaneering International Marine Services Division Apprenticeship Program Manager Guy St. JohnNCPN conference workforce career pathways. The session will provide attendees with tools for creating successful, industry-driven apprenticeship models which engage

community/technical colleges and award completers industry-valued credentials, as well as college credit counting toward academic certificates and degrees. 

TransPORTs is a strong strategic partner to Ranken Technical College, the State of Kentucky and Oceaneering International in their respective work to expand apprenticeship opportunities for  American workers. With TransPORTs’ support, Ranken Technical College has been able to expand its cutting-edge youth and college student-oriented apprenticeship program for automotive technician specialists. Several hundred apprentices earn a degree from the college while earning a paycheck from on-the-job learning performed at participating automotive dealerships.

TransPORTs is actively collaborating with the State of Kentucky as part of the Commonwealth’s deep commitment to expanding apprenticeship. The two entities held a joint Apprenticeship Accelerator in July featuring the Kentucky Secretary of Labor Derrick Ramsey; attendees represented more than 30 employers, workforce intermediaries, secondary and post-secondary educational institutions. Within the last six months, TransPORTs has made investment commitments of nearly $200,000 to support new or expanded apprenticeship program development by 15 companies. TransPORTs financial investments and deep technical assistance are being used by participating companies to create new or expanded programs that will benefit more than 500 apprentices in over 20 different occupations.

TransPORTs has also provided financial support and technical assistance to Oceaneering’s Marine Services Division apprenticeship program which is a national model of apprenticeship for employers in the shipbuilding, repair, maintenance, and modernization sector.

NCPN is a national association of educators, workforce development professionals, employers, and policy makers dedicated to advancing career pathways, career technical education (CTE), and workforce development initiatives.
